This is seriously fucked up.
When normal capital punishment began to feel inadequate—plus, Earth’s prisons had been filled to the brim—a coalition of Earth’s most prominent government entities collaborated to build “The Cranberry-Rainbow Barge” (known among inmates and employees simply as “The Cranberry”), a huge and elaborate spacecraft built with an emphasis on hedonism, decked with the most expensive pleasure-making equipment money can buy (alcohol to the nines, TVs everywhere, music, sex, etc., etc.), to be launched upon completion into the furthest reaches of space, accessible only by prisoner transport shuttles. Before their arrival, prisoners of The Cranberry undergo a procedure which removes their mouths and shrinks the muscles around their eyeballs, robbing them of their ability to show any sort of expression at all, robbing them of their ability to smile or drink or eat (deceiving intravenous ‘Feeding Shots’ [provided by the Nestle Corporation] each day at appointed ‘meal’ times to ensure they don't starve) and making any sort of fun-having or hedonism pretty much impossible. Furthermore, every square inch of The Cranberry is architecturally and aesthetically honed to tease the inmates in the most psychologically torturous way possible, with huge neon signs reminding them to “SMILE,” and “HAVE FUN,” even though—as has been well established—those two things are completely out of the picture.
